DIY Speaker Project PAD

Meniscus guys,

Just thought I would take a minute to implore you to come to the Lone Star Audio Fest next year. This year, Fred Dieckman hosted a DIY room and I showed off my Continuum's.

They drew rave reviews from anyone who heard them. No one could quite believe what could be achieved on a DIY basis for such a low cost. People were expecting the Continuums to cost upwards of $1000 for the drivers.

I think it would be awesome for you guys to have a room next year and show off what's possible with your kits. I know it's cost prohibitive to travel with lots of cabinets, so maybe the Texas DIY community could help out with that. We likely "sold" 4-7 Continuum kits yesterday alone. I can only imagine if you were to have more of your kits showing off in the room.

I don't know that they have assembled kits in house to demo there in GR even.

I think I see what he's getting at.
1. Ship a few kits to Texas (Tyger23, Fred Dieckmann, maybe someone else).
2. Recipient builds said kits, and brings the finished speakers to Lone Star.
3. Lotsa potential customers hear the speakers, and inquire about the possibility of building them.
4. Mark and Joel sell beaucoup kits!

I've been looking for an excuse to go to Dallas. This sounds like a great event. I will definitely look in to this.

Mark (Meniscus) - I for one would be glad to help you guys out. Feel free to contact me at any time. Having some Kairos, Speedsters, OS's, etc. would be great. You could show of the range of DIY and let people hear what they would be getting. I think this would be a great way to sell some kits. One of the things that almost kept me from buying the Continuum's was that I had never heard them. Of course, I'm glad I took the chance. A venue like this provides a way for other people to remove the "fears" of an unknown design.

Personally, I wish the event were in Austin. It's a much cooler city , but I'm biased.

I think you should go, Mark. It would be great to see you again. I'm attending in a non-commercial role.

I have an ongoing experiment gathering data on critical listener preference relative to IIR and FIR filters. I have an active system with the DSP programmed so that I can switch between IIR/FIR on the fly while having the overall loudspeaker performance matched as closely as possible, including identical crossover points.

I will have it set up in a room so that willing victims...errr...attendees can listen under both conditions and make an assessment. I will record the results and see how uniform or random the final outcome is. Since I live near Dallas and have a pile of unused Hotels.com free nights, the price was certainly right.

I have also agreed to present a one hour class on basic room acoustics. It will be a shorter version of the one I used to present at the annual Stereophile Shows.

Find that excuse you have been looking for and head South!
